The Giant Echidna!

The Giant Echidna!

We were on our way from Yulara to Alice Springs and found this Giant Echidna at a service station – i think it was the one at Erldunda – just off the Stuart Highway???
He’s pretty cool… I love big stuff… every town should have something big on display.
All they need now are some giant ants to feed the giant echidna ;)

Desert Flower – A Banksia… I think???

Desert Flower - A Banksia... I think???

I think this flower is a Banksia? I did some searching on the web and it looks similar… it’s just that most of the Banksias are more rounded on the end?!?

Uluru Wall Paintings

Uluru Wall Paintings

These are most of the remains of the wall paintings you’re allowed to see on Uluru. There’s probably more around the rock but they’re sealed off to photographers because they’re culturally sensitive sites.
A lot of the painting have worn away… dust has got at them and worn the paint off. The ranger who led our tour also told us that back in the old days tour guides used to throw water all over the rock paintings so that the pictures showed up better in the photos. Can’t do that any more though :D

Last shot of an Uluru Sunrise

Last shot of an Uluru Sunrise

I promise this is the last shot!!! This is at the break of dawn and the sun is a bit higher now. The sky is starting to turn blue and the foreground is a lit up a bit.
I was going to stick around a bit longer and take a photo once the sun was up and over the rock – that way I would catch a golden glow on all of the spinifex in the foreground but I’d already been up for 2 hours and didn’t feel like sticking around for another 2 hours… wheres the dedication Wilvis :P

Another Uluru At Sunrise Photo

Another Uluru At Sunrise Photo

Yep… another shot of Uluru at sunrise. The sun is actually coming up from behind the rock so I couldn’t capture the sun itself :(

Sunset At Kata Tjuta

Sunset At Kata Tjuta

We took a tour of Kata Tjuta with Eco Tours. It wasn’t a bad tour and the guy who led us knew a lot about area.
We enjoyed some wine and dukah while watching the sun… It’s similar to Uluru as the colour of the rocks change as the sun sets.

Inside Kata Tjuta

Inside Kata Tjuta

Water collects between the rocks in the Olgas. The water feeds a variety of native of Australian native plants.

Entrance Into Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

Entrance Into Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

This is the entrance to Kata Tjuta – otherwise known as the Olgas. The ground is like an old cobblestone path that you’d find in a medieval town.
In summer it’s too hot to walk up these rocks. The large rocks on either side of the walkway act like an oven making passage impassable.

Will Patting A Camel

Will Patting A Camel

This is me patting a camel… it wasn’t wombat (the camel that carried us)… he seemed a little anti-social.

The camels are pretty funny… they all made noises before we got on them to try and scare us off riding them. They then walked pretty slowly on the trip out to the lookout but once it came to the return trip home they picked up speed.

The cameleer that took us out told us that on average a camel can drink 210L of water in 10 minutes and that they drink every chance they get. They’ve can smell water from a distance and have been known to rip open people’s air conditioners because they can smell the moisture.
