Kurilpa Bridge On The Brisbane River

Kurilpa Bridge On The Brisbane River

This is Brisbane’s newest bridge and it’s almost completed. Kurilpa bridge is a foot bridge that will connect the outskirts of the CBD to West End.

I’ve got to admit I find the design a little curious – from a techincal perspective it’s brilliant. The design is based on the principle of “tensegrity” which uses both tension and compression elements to make the bridge stronger with less material.

Having said that I just don’t like it! The big problem I have with this bridge is that along with many of the other developments in Brisbane there’s just no theme. By itself the bridge looks fine – but it’s a very modern design sandwiched between two older and more classical bridges. Overall the riverfront is becoming a patchwork of development and the natural landscape is being crowded out.

  1. John Trude says:

I have to say, this is the worst bridge design I have ever seen. It may be an engineering
marvel but as far as aesthetics go it is a disaster. There isn’t a single flowing line except the road line and that is completely distorted by the “bad hair day”. This is so disappointing. How could the council approve a design so out of whack with the function.
