Australia Zoo

Well I just did a visit to Australia Zoo a few weeks ago… if  you’re ever in the neighbourhood then I can’t recommend dropping into the zoo highly enough. Australia Zoo is one of the worlds best zoos… for those that don’t know this is the zoo that the late Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) created. The animals are all treated well and kept in as close to their natural habitats as possible.

One of the great things about this zoo is that it’s so obvious that the staff put the welfare of the animals first. The animals are in their natural habitats and not showcased in concrete and steel. The other things that is amazing is how much the Irwins have re-invested back into the zoo. They are constantly expanding the zoo to create new habitats for different animals. They also support many programs that protect endagered species and nurse animals back to health.

Most people who visit Australia Zoo go to look at crocodiles. The zoo puts on several live shows a day with the Crocodiles as the main attraction. They are truly incredible animals to watch… they are just so massive and powerful. The crocodiles are one of the main attractions and the show at the crocoseum is awesome. The show also includes a lot of other animals which are incredibly rare and endangered.

Who can’t love the koala’s? Koala’s must be about the laziest animal on the planet. They sleep and eat all day and get a little more active at night.  I kind of felt sorry for the animals… all the tourists are there taking photos with their flashes on… I think the poor little fellas don’t like the bright lights and it gets on their nerves a bit.

It’s actually pretty funny how many lazy animals we’ve got here in Australia. Maybe it has to do with the hot dry climate. The kangaroos didn’t like moving much either and we’re happy sunning it up on the grass. They only show signs of life when you go to feed them and even then they expect you to come to them. The wombats didn’t like doing much either although one of them really loved having it’s fur combed by the zoo staff.

The zoo is also home to some of Australia’s more dangerous animals too. There’s quite a few dingoes there and they have a massive snake collection. Australia has many of the most venomous and dangerous snakes in the world so this is a great section to spend some time in.

My personal favourite was the elephants. I think the big thing is that you can get much closer to the elephants than you can to the crocodiles so you really get to appreciate their size and beauty. They sort of remind me of really big and hairless dogs.

All of the shows at Australia zoo are fantastic and showcase many animals you just can’t see anywhere else. The presentations are also filled with facts and the presentations keep you really interested.

The other thing worth doing while your here is donate some money to the wildlife warriors fund. All of the money goes into programs that protect endangered animals so it’s definitely a good cause.
